Northern and Southern perspectives on responsible finance.
Debt crisis is no longer an unfamiliar term for most people. Countries all over the world struggle with high debt burdens and are forced to adapt austerity measures which are harmful for the people and their rights. The UN is trying to develop principles for responsible lending, and the EU is discussing a new insolvency procedure for indebted countries. A new economic reality has been established after the financial crisis, and the international community is now searching for solutions:
What is needed to stop irresponsible behaviour in the financial sector?
Which efforts must be directed at events which take place before a loan contract is entered into, and which must be implemented when one of the parties is unable to fulfil the contract.
When do we cross the line when voluntary guidelines must be replaced by binding rules and regulations?
SLUG is hosting a seminar to look at the different preventative rules, regulations and principles, as well as the necessary mechanisms and efforts, which are needed to save countries from debt crises and make sure debt burdens do not prevent development.
